What are you looking for?

Something you may or may not about me is that I am a twin. There is exactly one minute between my older sister Ellis and I. Although I'm really luck to say she is my best friend it doesn't mean we've always had the easiest of times!

I am a twin, not an alien.
No I can't read her thoughts and no if you pinch me she won't feel it. You know why? Big shock I'm not an alien. The amount of times I've had to deal with people randomly running up and pinching me to see if Ellis will feel it is ridiculous. It just doesn’t make any sense why she would feel it in the first place! There is no science or reasoning behind it so please, stop pinching me. On this note, we most definitely cannot read each other’s minds and I don’t think either of us would want to. The reason that I know what Ellis is thinking or is about to say some of the time comes from me spending the past 20 years with her and knowing her as well as I know myself. We know how each other is feeling but it isn’t become of some weird twin telepathy.

Like it or not growing up as a twin there was bound to be a lot of jealousy between us- who had the most friends, who got into the best university, who does mum love more (me… it’s definitely me). I’m sure most siblings would agree with this but being a twin was hard. We were in the same year and had the same teachers who used to compare us. I was always jealous of how Ellis was such a people person and could make friends with anyone! Whereas, I was socially awkward and struggled to even say hi to most people. A bit of competition is good but I feel that at times we really let our jealousy get in the way of our friendship.

There’s just no space!
Now we are both at uni I miss Ellis every day and wish I could go back to the time where we shared a room and every night was like a sleepover. Growing up was a different story. Being together 24/7 was hard and I think we ended up resenting each other for how much time we had to spend together. We went to school together, we had the same friends, we did everything together and it became a bit of a nightmare! Now we are older and doing our own thing we have more to talk about and spend time together because we genuinely want to, not because we have to.

Being your own person.
The amount of times we have been referred to as “the twins” is shocking. Yes we are twins but more importantly we are Ellis and Robyn, two different people. Luckily my parents never dressed us the same and always encouraged us to be our own person. It helps that we aren’t identical and as you can probably see from the pictures- we are complete opposites! When we were teens I think we felt this storng sense to try and be as different as possible. I mean now we borrow each others clothes all the time (twin bonus!) and Ellis wants to be like me so much she had her nose pierced ;) but overall I think we truly are our own person, which is one of the things I love the most about us.

We often joke about how if we weren’t twins we’d hate each other because of how different we are. But honestly, I’m so glad that I have Ellis as my twin. If I didn’t have her I wouldn’t have the greatest friend I could ever ask for and the one person I can rely on infinitely. I love being a twin, but more importantly- I love being Ellis’ twin.
