MY WEEK OF SELF CARE

I feel like a lot of us can identify with not doing enough to actively look after ourselves. There is always something I put before my own self-care: work, other people, running this blog. Last week I decided to take the week to completely look after myself and see if it was really that hard to fit self-care in. I had the week of from uni and I was the only person in the house all week, so this was the golden opportunity to truly immerse myself in self-love and I learnt quite a bit.

It's okay to indulge.
Anyone else think nah I shouldn’t eat that, it’s bad for me or I can’t do that I have so many other things to do? Yeah me too. I tried to let myself indulge a little bit- I had a takeaway (it was incredible) and I went out and brought myself a really nice cake. I know it may seem silly but I feel like we have this tendency to not do things because we feel we haven’t earnt it or there are other things to do. But I am here to tell you- treat yo self! Even if it’s something little- you deserve it!

The little things are the best.

I didn't spend hardly anything this week- I brought my weekly food shop and treated myself to a take away but that was it! I had this misconceived idea that self-care was expensive, but it's not! You don't have to go to a spa or buy yourself a ridiculously priced face mask. I cannot tell you how excited I was when I decided to wash my bed sheets on Tuesday as part of my self-care week. There is nothing better than freshly washed sheets okay and climbing into these that night made me feel like I was in heaven. I learnt that there are little things I can incooperate into my daily life to make me feel happier and better about myself- washing my sheets, cooking myself a nice meal, taking the time to have a bath.

It's okay to love yourself.

Inspired by my week of self-care I wrote a post about my issues with body image and self-confidence. I often see blogging as cheap therapy for myself. I don’t like talking about my issues, but I find it really therapeutic to write them all down (and share them on the internet- I swear my logic makes no sense!). Through writing that post and taking pictures of myself in a bodysuit, I gained so much self-love for myself. I’m at such a better place in my life and I have finally embraced my body for what it is. This week a huge lesson I learnt was to love myself and not feel bad for it! Being alone and treating myself to date nights was an incredible feeling. I gained so much independence and learnt that the only love I need is from myself!

You need to eat three meals a day.
Okay, so this one seems pretty obvious but how many of you have ever skipped a meal because you didn't have time or couldn't fit it into your schedule? Yeah, I thought so. I am guilty of often skipping meals because I somehow couldn't find time or justify eating over doing something I saw as more important. I never realised how little priority I gave to eating until this week. Eating is a necessity, it's not an option. I felt so much better in myself after making sure I was actually eating! I had more energy, was more focused and overall just a nicer person! I know it can be hard but we need to make sure we are giving ourselves time to eat! It's so important!

You are not a robot, it's okay to take a break.
I'm a perfectionist. I will spend all my time working on something, whether it be a blog post or uni work, until I feel like it is perfect. I realised that I spend the majority of my time working- getting up early to do uni work, working until stupid o clock editing assignments and writing blog posts. This week I learnt that it's okay to just stop and not do any work for a day. I need to remember that I'm a person, not a machine and that sometimes I need to just stop and take a break. For my own sanity if nothing else!

Self-care is the best thing you can do for your mind and body.

This week I feel like I've had my epiphany moment, in which I truly believe that self-care is the best thing you can do for yourself! I feel so much happier and am in such a better place as a result of all the little things I did this week. I realised how easy it was to immerse yourself in self- love and self-care, as well as realising how much I had been neglecting my body and mind. We should be taking more care of ourselves because this is the only body we have! We should be looking after it a lot more than what a lot of us actually do. It's an incredible feeling to know that you are looking after yourself and one thing we need to do more of is putting ourselves and our health first!

I'd love to know any self-care tips or advice you have!

Till next time,

  10. I am super guilty of forgetting to eat on days that I have University. It's just one huge rush! To be honest, I love taking baths every other night to read and to think about all the good moments I've had during the past few days.

  13. I'm a huge believer in self care, even though I might not do it all the time (oops) I try to include a little bit of self care into my daily routine but it can sometimes be difficult to do. Particularly when it comes to being confident about my body or making sure to eat well everyday. This post has some great advice in it though, much of which I will try to include in my own personal self care.

  15. Self-care is SO important and so many people I know just think it's selfish and lazy but if you don't take the time to look after yourself you'll just crash and burn and then you're no good to anyone!
