BALANCING A BLOG AND A FULL TIME JOB


Whilst the majority of bloggers wish that we could spend our day writing posts, creating content and getting the perfect shot for the 'gram. The reality for most of us is that we have to balance doing what we love with a full time job. It can be quite a difficult balancing act to get right and over the past year I feel like I've learnt quite a lot about how to balance the two...

I have quite a demanding job - which means I have to spend quite a lot of my time focusing on my job. Being a teacher means I have to do a lot of planning and preparation and I most definitely don't clock out as soon as my class leaves at 3:30 everyday! This year I've decided to take on even more responsibility at work (yeah, I don't know why I decided to do this either!). So, I am having to learn to balance both my job and my blog even more than I've ever done before. The key to balancing a blog and a full time job is being organised. It requires a lot of forward planning and thinking ahead, so I thought I would share my top tips for anyone struggling to find the balance to help you be more organised.

1. THINK ABOUT SHOOTING PHOTOS IN BULK 

I have a very limited amount of time, as to when I can shoot. I can only shoot on the weekend and even then sometimes I have other plans or the weather is not on my side! Something I have learnt to do is to shoot blog photos in bulk. I will sometimes shoot 5 or 6 outfits in one day and it has become such a time saver and more efficient way for me to ensure I always have content ready to share. 


2. SCHEDULE POSTS AND TWEETS IN ADVANCE

Something I have had to learn to develop and become good at is scheduling. Making sure my blog posts are scheduled in advance during the week and scheduling my tweets have really helped to limit blog stress. Scheduling tweets has been the best way for me to make sure I have a constant presence online, even when I'm busy at work.


3. ASK FOR HELP 

My blog has become a bit of a team effort over the past few months and I can't tell you how much it has helped me out! Having some help to schedule tweets or plan content has been a life saver and having other people to help share blog responsibilities has meant I can get so much more done in a short space of time. Trying to single handedly manage a blog and a full time job can be insanely stressful so having someone to help out has been the biggest help!


4. SET SOME TIME ASIDE 

I love my blog. What started as a hobby has become so much more! My blog is what I love to do and getting to create and share content is the best feeling. It can be so easy to let yourself get swamped by work and a never ending to do list of life. Part of the balance between blogging and full time work, is to set some time aside to blog. I choose to blog because I love what I do, I set aside some time each week where I can sit down and focus on my blog and I honestly look forward to it every single week! It's important to remember that blogging should be fun and it shouldn't feel like another job. 


5. DON'T BE SO HARD ON YOURSELF! 

In a dream world, I would love to say that I do this all the time. However, in reality sometimes I do get really behind on scheduling blog posts. I regularly forget to schedule tweets. Sometimes I can't always dedicate time to blogging. Sometimes I don't have any content to share. I know how it feels to put so much pressure on yourself. To feel like you have to shoot content or post to Instagram every day but sometimes it just isn't realistic. We need to stop putting so much pressure on ourselves and remember that it's okay to miss posts or to not tweet every day! Life and work can get in the way and sometimes blogging has to take a back seat. You can only do your best! 



I would love to say that these are the best ways to get the balance right - however, it is different for everyone. What works for me, might not work for others. It can be difficult to get the balance right between balancing running a blog and working full time and you aren't ever going to get the balance right all of the time. At the end of the day, we are real people with real lives and we can only do our best!
