DRESSING OUT OF MY FASHION COMFORT ZONE

When I first saw this dress, I really loved it but was slightly hesitant as it isn't something I would typically wear and wasn't a dress I would say is in my usual style. But, I took a gamble and wore it for my birthday last summer. Despite it being a little out of my fashion comfort bubble I loved how it looked and haven't had much of a chance to wear it since, as my birthday is at the end of Summer and this is very much a Spring/Summer dress. So, since the weather has warmed up and I feel we are definitely getting some of that lovely hot sunshine, I've swapped my wardrobes and am bringing this dress out.

Wearing this dress, I get comments about me looking like a "lady" and about how people didn't know I could dress this "elegant" or about how much of a "girl" I look and I didn't quite know how to take it at first. I guess the thing with my fashion style and the clothes I choose to wear is that they aren't your typical "feminine" looking clothes, which I am absolutely fine with because I am not a very feminine girl and I haven't been since I was a kid. Growing up, I was a typical "girly girl" (urgh, that phrase makes me cringe) but I used to play with dolls, loved the colour pink, would wear things that were sparkly... and now I feel like I've done a complete 180 and hate all of those things. It's funny how we change as we mature and become adults. But anyways, I guess I got used to hearing people describe how I dress as "different" or "spooky" or "weird" and it didn't bother me one bit but then on the flip side to how people compliment me when I wear this dress, just makes me see the contrast between how I am seen in two different styles of clothing. But the one thing that doesn't change, is the person wearing the clothes. It's still me. Sometimes, I forget that I'm allowed to wear different types of clothes and wear things that I like because I'm too worried they aren't "goth" enough or don't fit my usual style. But, at the end of the day they're just clothes and I'm the only person that gets to have an opinion on what I want to wear.

Despite it being different to my usual kind of dress, I really do love this dress and can't wait to wear it more this Summer (if we are out by then, here's hoping!). I feel like it's really easy to fall into the habit of only wearing a certain type of clothes or feeling limited to one style but I'm learning how important it is to put that aside and do what you want to do because it's your decision and you never know, you might even surprise yourself!
